Best road trip of Europe
Forget everything you ever know about road tripping. Forget spending hours in the back of a cramped and stuffy car and fitting in 1000 miles of driving in a day. That’s not the way to do it. If you want to know the best road trip of Europe you need to take your time and enjoy the trip rather than drive like you’ve got somewhere to be. And the reason why you’ve got to learn to slow down is because the best road trip of Europe takes place in stunning, sunny, serene Sardinia – an Italian island in the middle of the Mediterranean, covered in beaches, cliffs, and colourful sunrises over the ocean. For the best European road trip, you’re going to want to drive around and visit all of the quaint little beaches around the island.
To make the most out of your trip and avoid the normal stresses of a road trip, take a decent sized car or a camping tent and expect your trip to last around two weeks. There are no less than 40 campsites around Sardinia and lots of bed and breakfasts, so you’re not going to be short of places to sleep. Rather than using your money for a hotel room, use it to get some of the amazing food you’ll find there. Seafood is the specialty of Sardinia and no matter where you go around the island it’s always fresh and delicious. To save money on travel insurance you can apply for a European health card if you live elsewhere in Europe. If you want to take a break from driving, you should also check out some of the hiking routes. You’ll find some incredible views and can see one of Sardinia’s famous sunrises from the top of a cliff.
When it comes to your driving route, you’ll find quite a few roads that circuit around the island, so pick a place to start and focus on hitting the best beaches along the way. There’s nothing better than getting out of your car, stretching your legs and taking a dip in the ocean. If you’re looking for the best of the best, these are the beaches you absolutely cannot miss:
This is possible one of the prettiest beaches you will ever see in your life. The water is shallow and blue while the beach itself is a long stretch of gleaming white sand that you can’t help but want to dig your toes in. Rent a paddle board to paddle around the coast and get a good look at the Tavolara Island cliffs.
This is the place to find flamingos, white dunes, blue skies and crystal clear water. There’s not much to do at this beach, but it is certainly very pretty.
Just outside of Stintino you’ll find this great curved beach. It can get a little crowded during the summer, but if you come at the right time you can have that clean, seaweed-free ocean all to yourself.
The beaches of Chia
The south east of Sardinia has a lot of great beaches that can’t be missed. In fact, this is the area where you should slow down the most and take a few days to tour the beaches and get a good dose of Sardinian culture and food. The driving routes around the south east are also gorgeous and you can stop off in Cagliari, Sardinia’s capital city, to see the colourful medieval architecture and visit the museums.
